Discord Server Name Generator

A good server name tells a stranger what happens inside, in about a second. It is read in a list of other servers, at small size, usually on a phone.

These 4 things separate the names that work from the ones that do not:

• •Short. 2 or 3 words. Longer names get cut off.
• •Specific. Speedrunning Guild beats Gaming Community.
• •Sayable. Most invites travel by someone saying the name out loud.
• •Spellable. If people guess the spelling, they cannot search for you.

Discord gives you 2 to 100 characters. You should use about 20 of them. The server list down the side of Discord is narrow. A name that runs past it is a name nobody reads in full.

One rule has no exceptions. Do not pick a name that looks like the official server for a game, a company, or a person. It gets your server reported. It also costs you every member who joined thinking you were somebody else.

The name shows up in 4 places you do not control:

• •The invite page, next to your icon, before anyone joins.
• •The server list, where members pick you out of 30 icons.
• •Search, inside Discord and on every server listing site.
• •Every screenshot and every link a member sends a friend.

On an invite page the name is the only sentence most people read. They get your icon, your name, and a member count. If the name does not say what the server is for, the decision falls to the icon. The icon is tiny.

Search is where a vague name really costs you. Nobody types cool community into a server listing. They type the thing they are into. A name carrying that word can be found.

1. 1.Type your topic. 1 or 2 words about what the server is for: speedrunning, lo-fi beats, options trading. Leave the text boxes empty and the names come from the built-in word lists instead.
2. 2.Pick the community type and the tone. The type sets which community words are available: Gaming brings in Guild and Arena, Professional brings in Roundtable and Exchange. The tone does the same for the flavour words. Not every name uses both. Some lean on your topic with a word in front or on the end instead.
3. 3.Add extra words if you have them, and set the name shapes. Turning off Three-word names or A word on the end narrows what comes back. Turn both lengths off and nothing is left to build with. The tool says so instead of going blank.
4. 4.Read the tags under each name. Between them they account for every part of it. Your topic, your extra words, the tone, the community, a word in front, a word on the end, or the emoji. One tag names no part: alliteration flags names whose words share a first letter. That is how you tell why a name works.
5. 5.Star the ones you like, then hit New names for a fresh batch. Your saved list survives every change until you reset. Copy one name, or copy the lot.

A generator gives you candidates. Picking one is still your job, and it takes about 10 minutes. Work down this list:

• •Say each name out loud. Drop the ones you stumble over.
• •Search it inside Discord and on a server listing site. A bigger server with that name is a problem.
• •Search it on the web with your topic, looking for an existing product or company.
• •Check a trademark register if the name could pass for a business. The US and EU ones are free to search.
• •Check the handle is free on the one platform you will actually post from.
• •Read it as a stranger. Does it say what happens inside, or only how it feels?

Trademarks are the check people skip and the one that bites. Nobody is going to sue you over a Discord server. You can still lose the name after you have built on it. Renaming then costs you everyone who searches for the old one. If a name sounds like a real company, spend 2 minutes on a register before you commit.

Drop these 4 kinds of name straight away:

• •Anything with Official in it, unless you are.
• •Anything copying a game, a studio, or a person.
• •Anything spelled with numbers standing in for letters.
• •Anything only the 6 people in the room that night would get.

Then commit. Changing a server name is free and takes 10 seconds, which makes it tempting to keep tinkering. Every change costs you the people searching for the name they remember. Pick one, put it on your icon and banner too, and leave it alone.
