What is a Discord rules template?

It is a ready-made, numbered list of server rules. You copy it in and change the parts that do not fit. A good one covers what every server hits sooner or later: spam, harassment, NSFW posts, and people plugging their own stuff. It also says what happens when someone breaks a rule.

Most servers write their rules twice. Once at launch, then again in a panic after the first real incident. Starting from a template makes that second version a quick edit instead of a rewrite.

This generator builds yours from your answers. Your community type decides which rules appear. Your tone decides how they are worded. Everything runs in your browser — no login, no AI, no waiting.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why clear server rules matter

Without written rules, three things get harder:

  • •Your mods burn out. A numbered rule ends an argument in one line. Without one, every single removal turns into a debate about fairness.
  • •New members leave. People decide fast whether a server feels safe. Visible rules — and visible enforcement — decide whether they post or quietly close the tab.
  • •You carry more risk. Discord's Terms of Service apply to your server either way. Restating them lets your team act early, before reports reach Discord.

Holding something valuable — a token, an allowlist, a marketplace? Rules are your first scam defence. A member who has read "the team never DMs first" is much harder to phish.

How to write Discord server rules that people actually follow

The template gets you started. These 6 habits keep it working:

  • •Keep it to 5–10 rules. That is what people actually read. Needing more usually means a channel problem, not a missing rule.
  • •Be specific. "Be respectful" is a wish. "No personal attacks, slurs, or pile-ons" is something a mod can act on.
  • •Say the consequence. People follow rules they think are enforced. Name what happens on a first offence and what earns an instant ban — then stick to it.
  • •Put them where people join. Use a read-only rules channel, pin the short version, and turn on Membership Screening so nobody posts before accepting.
  • •Update them when the server changes. A token launch or a big campaign creates cases your rules never covered. Reread them every few months.
  • •Have your mods follow them too. Nothing kills a rule faster than staff breaking it in public.

  4. 4.No self-promotion — Advertising, server invites, and promotional content require prior approval from the moderation team.

Copy the full template into a dedicated read-only rules channel or into Membership Screening (Server Settings → Safety Setup → DM and Spam Protection → Membership Screening on Community servers), and paste the short version into your #rules channel so it fits in one message.

Five to ten. Fewer than five usually leaves obvious gaps like spam or NSFW content uncovered; more than ten stops getting read. Start from the essentials and only add rules that answer problems your server has actually had.
